The Revolutionary War And The American Civil War - 1614 Words

The Revolutionary War gave birth to America, but the American Civil War would define America’s future with the blood of its own citizens. The Civil War proved to be bloody and confusing war for both the Union and Confederacy. Even in the confusion they both understood the importance of the Shenandoah Valley and what it meant to their war effort and aspirations of victory. Whoever controlled the Shenandoah Valley controlled a major logistical artery and also the entire Virginia Region. The valley is the key to military strength and ultimate victory of the War so the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns began. The Valley would be contested from the July 1861 until March of 1865. The Valley covered an area form Blue Ridge Mountains south to the Allegheny Mountains. The Valley allowed the Confederacy easy access to the Unions capital of Washington D.C.. The same Valley would also provide the Union a direct route to the Confederates capital of Richmond. Both capitals are only fifty miles ap art which also highlights the importance of the Shenandoah Valley. With the Valley being of grave importance to both sides explains why it was fought over the majority of the duration of the civil war. The Union would find the valley to be a tough nut to crack and found it hard to take advantage of what the valley could offer. On the other hand the Confederacy realized its advantages early in the war and exploited it. The confederacy knew that the valley provided a large base of sustenance.
